Compiled by BLOOD! (LTonks@iclretail.icl.com)
with help from a cast of thousands (well, a few dozen, anyway).

ORIGINAL INTRODUCTION (shamelessly cribbed from last year's manual!)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Way back in the mists of time there was a top little 8-bit computer
called the Spectrum. It wasn't the best equipped beast in the world, but
it was fun to use, it was cheap, and it had a decent built in programming
language. And lo, people did write their own crappy little games for it,
which weren't world beaters, but were fun none the less. After the poor
little Speccy was pronounced dead by 'They Who Control The World
Markets', most people forgot about programming their computers and just
set about playing games instead, 'cos it required less brains and also
because most computers didn't come with a built-in language (or a
keyboard, in the case of some dumb c*nsoles). And a little light went
out in the world.

Way back in the early days of the Speccy, a company called Cascade
decided it would be a smart money-spinning idea to produce the biggest
compilation of Spectrum games ever. This was called Cassette 50, and
should by rights have been the best compilation ever. However, instead
of giving you Speccy classics like Manic Miner or Jetpac for your cash,
you got fifty incredibly dodgy BASIC programs, each one taking less than
a minute to load and usually lasting the same amount of time on your
Speccy before you were bored of it and reset!

Zooming back to present day, the Speccy is now mainly a virtual machine
(emulated on various bigger, although not necessarily better,
computers). But what should I discover in amongst the Spectrum classics
one day? A copy of Cassette 50, converted in its entirety to run under
an emulator. And it's just as bad these days (even though it doesn't
take quite so long to load)!

Having uploaded this file to NVG, I happened upon an idea. Wouldn't it
be fun to knock together a similar compilation of our own in order to
prove that we could produce a better compilation than Cascade when we
were TRYING to make the games crap!

The Comp.Sys.Sinclair Crap Games Compilation was born!

UPDATE
------
And lo, the compilation was released in early 1996 and all was good.
Until everyone badgered me into doing another compilation for 1997, that
is! Well, after much more blood sweat and tears than last year I can now
proudly (?) present this NEW addition to the Crap Games family!

WHAT THE HELL IS IT?
--------------------
This compilation is made up of contributions from the readers of
comp.sys.sinclair. They were asked to contribute games they had written
many moons ago (and which they thought were crap) or to write new stuff
with the specific intention of making it as crap as possible. This
compilation is the fruit of their labour! (If this compilation really
was a fruit, it would probably be something ugly and horrible. Probably
better to describe it as a vegetable, 'cos then it could be a sprout!)

USAGE INSTRUCTIONS
------------------
You'll need an emulator, for one! It should also be possible to transfer
these games to a real Speccy, but please don't ask me how 'cos if you
don't know already you don't have the tools to do it! Okay?

All of the games will run on a bog-standard 48k Spectrum, and all of
the games are all stored as .SNA format snapshot files. This is the
most convenient format, as it is most widely supported throughout the
emulator community. As a result, just about any old emulator should be
able to load them. There should be no problem converting these files
to other formats thought, if you should wish to....

True to Cassette 50 style, all of the snapshots have been given three
letter filenames! If this is annoying, GOOD! It was meant to be....! ;-)

All of the 48k snaps have been tested with Z80 and X128 on a PeeCee. They
all work, so I guess they should be pretty much okay on any emulator (I
mean, it's not like the games are really complex and use non-standard
programming techniques or anything!).

HOWEVER! Some of the games below are marked with an asterisk (*). These
games are quite old and will only run properly on an early issue
Spectrum (the keyboard won't respond if you're using a later model). If
your emulator has a selector to enable you to emulate an Issue 2 Speccy,
you'll need to set it to ON! If it doesn't have one of these, chances
are the game won't work.... Sorry 'bout that, but there's not a lot I
can do about it.

Also note that some of the games require you to PRESS A KEY after
loading the snap! This is to preserve the random nature of the game in
order to prevent you from getting the same game every time. Trust me, it
matters....

BUT THESE GAMES ARE CRAP!
-------------------------
They're meant to be, silly! Don't expect these games to change your
life, they're not supposed to be the Speccy equivalent of Quake! They're
supposed to be a nostalgic trip back to the days when graphics weren't
everything and anyone could knock up a quick game in about half an hour.
And don't judge the Speccy on these titles either, there was
approximately 9,000,000 incredibly better games available. If you have
any comments or complaints, I guess you better direct them to me or to
the guys who wrote the games! But we won't take any notice of nasty
comments.

THE END!
--------
Well, that just about wraps it up for the introduction, I guess. Not
that it was too much work, 'cos I ripped most of it from last year's
manual! :-)

Thanks to everyone who has contributed this year, especially Ian Collier
who seems to have entered far more games than is healthy... :-)
I hope we've got a quality (?) product again - the standard of games
certainly seems to be a bit better this year, although whether that's
a good thing in a Crap Games compilation, I dunno!

As to next year, we'll have to see whether I do another one of these or
not. It was a bit taxing the second time around..... ;-)

Enjoy!

Blood.

The Speccy's not dead - it was just resting!
Who needs 500Mb of rendered intro when Jetpac fits in 16k?!

THE INSTRUCTIONS
----------------
Here are the instructions for the games. These are taken either
directly from the game, directly from the author, or made up off the top
of my head in a half-baked attempt to describe them. Or a combination
of some or all of those. Confused? Good.

The instructions are best used if you print them out and read the blurb
for a game JUST BEFORE you run it, so the description is still fresh in
your mind. Wouldn't want you to get all confused with so many games to
play would we? ;-)

By popular demand I've made the instructions a bit more informative this
year - in other words I've listed the keys and what you're supposed to
do if the program itself doesn't tell you!

Oh yeah, and when I was writing these I was wearing my advertiser's hat
and rose-tinted spectacles.... In other words, don't believe EVERYTHING
you read....! Ah, the advertisements of yore.....

A fast-action maze game utilising all of the Speccy's resources! Watch
in awe as the computer draws a red line, then colour it in using the
cursor keys and trying not to visit the same square twice!

5) BALLOON
----------
Filename : bal.sna
Who to blame : Ian Collier (Ian.Collier@comlab.ox.ac.uk)

Burst some balloons and brush up on your maths at the same time! Yes,
this is "edutainment" at it's finest, a fully configurable burst-fest
involving solving the sums and popping the correct balloons by pressing
SPACE! Don't forget to hold down B, N, M, L and ENTER to restart the
program once you're done! ;-)

6) BLITZ
--------
Filename : bli.sna
Who to blame : Ian Collier (Ian.Collier@comlab.ox.ac.uk)

Can you ever get enough "bomb the buildings" games? Nope, didn't think
so! Here's a scorcher so hot it was written BEFORE THE AUTHOR OWNED A
SPECTRUM! Based on a Vico 20 games from Your Computer in 1982, this is
the height of bomb-dropping fun!

7) BLUDISKO
-----------
Filename : blu.sna
Who to blame : Radovan Garabik (2garabik@center.fmph.uniba.sk)

Get lost in a potentially HUGE maze while searching for the lost
treasure! Bludisko generates mazes of enormous magnitude and detail, and
your lowly exporer moves from room to room using the cursor keys looking
for that elusive prize! New maze each time!

8) BASH N' GRAB

up lost bingo takings and mowing down old ladies whilst avoiding the
traffic cones, potholes and oncoming traffic! Beep beep!

9) BOING...PLOP

------------
Filename : bre.sna
Who to blame : Ian Collier (Ian.Collier@comlab.ox.ac.uk)

An amazing emulation of an old electronic game, but without the annoying
battery consumption! Play the game of breakout by simply pressing a key
when the ball reaches the bat in order to fire it off! The time at which
you press the key determines the angle at which the ball bounces back -
pressing it earlier makes it go more to the left! But watch out - press
it too late and the ball is OUT! Infinitely addictive!

11) BULLSEYE
------------
Filename : bul.sna
Who to blame : Ian Collier (Ian.Collier@comlab.ox.ac.uk)

A fantastically fun text-based hunting extravaganza! And then some!
Name any square and it will reveal a letter. You can use this letter to
cross off one of the letters in the animals listed below by pressing the
animal number. Occasionally it will give you a star instead of a letter.
This is a penalty. When you have revealed all four of the stars your
time is up and your score is the number of animals you "bagged". You bag
an animal by crossing off all its letters.

12) CAVES OF MONDONIA
---------------------
Filename : cav.sna
Who to blame : Adrian Samm (ade@finitive.demon.co.uk)

At last! A console-quality arcade platformer on your Speccy! Guide your

more, you can now play from the safety of your own PC! A fantastic fun

the "+" in the lower right-hand corner. Your job is to get home to the
"H" at the top of the maze. But there is also a bug, represented by a
"*", and if it gets there before you then you have lost. You also lose
if the bug catches you. If you find yourself trapped with no escape then
it can help to drive straight at it because the program gives you a 50%

An amazing new-age experience, perfect for those of you whose eyes have
been opened by this year's Glastonbury festival! There are no limits.
Simply place yourself in the correct meditative state and ponder on
life's little mysteries as the paint dries in front of you. Mind-blowing
graphics and a mysterious air of erm... mysticism! Good Karma!

EPILOGUE
--------
Well, that's it all over again! I'm not going to pick a "worst five"
this year, 'cos no-one agreed with my selections last year so I'm not
giving you any more cannon fodder! There are less entries this year, but
I think they're generally of better quality - i.e. they're all GAMES for
a start!

As for next year, well, we'll see how it goes, eh? ;-)
