These are some RAW notes on what I was doing when building the Pigeon system. They are very terse - which is sometimes more fun - but they have not been read yet, so dont be supprised if a thread doensn't make sense, or if the cat got near the keyboard.
This may include duplication, and phoney baloney. Under construction - STILL!
if all else fails use setup to do the tasks (install BASE)
netconfig
build kernel
ln -s /usr/src/linux /linux
make config
make dep
make zlilo # < 1024 cylinders ONLY # OFTEN OK for a day
make INSTALL_PATH=/boot/pigeon/. zlilo # relocates vmlinuz to there
make modules # takes AGES !
make modules_install
chown gps /tmp/pkgs_cd # place to unfold tars
chown gps /tmp/pkgs_ftp # and compile them
mc /tmp/pkgs /cdrom/X11/xutils # or navigate to there # LDR2 (sunsite)
tar -zxf CTRL-X CTRL-P TAB ESC_RETURN TAB
-or-
tar -zxf -C /tmp/pkgs ESC_RETURN
-ie-
tar -zxf -C /tmp/pkgs /cdrom/X11/utils -strcat_with('/')- xbmbrowser4.4.tar.gz # # MEDIA[ LDR2=sunsite ] # expect .lsm with wrong 4.4 version
Interesting apps I found on the way:
xv - x graphics viewer
RANGE of graphic file types
not quite GNU
needs QUIT button (olvwm's is OK)
xv grab option grabs window pixmap
sxpm - show xbm
sxbm /usr/doc/xbm/plaid.xbm
plain viewer from xbm people
window resize repeats pattern
bitmap -- MIT's xbm editor
mine came ready installed with Slackware
I used xbmbrowser to start it on a selected x-bit-map
xbmbrowser - good for looking at directories of icon.xbm
UNTAR
cd /cdrom/X11/utils
tar -C /tmp/pkgs xbmbrowser4.4.tar.gz
README
cd /tmp/pkgs/xbmbrowser4.4 # OR WHATEVER #
xterm -title xbmbrowser4.4/README -e less README # tells you to:

xwpick - UNTRIED - screen grabber for X ??
xmkmf

xvset -
untar relative file [LDR2=SUNSITE]:/cdrom/xvset/
not particularly interesting except for mouse repeat speed
xwininfo -all -children | less (click on desktop background)
all info except PID's ?
xprop -root
gives info about window
--- netpbm ---
With Emulate3Button get middle button by pressing both buttons together. X11 does this smoothly - no accidental misinterpretations, BUT may be 'slow' when detecting a plain button, when it waits for a release (or MOVE). To get the xbmbrowser menus, drag the mouse down over the title.
Emulate3Button allows change from LEFT-DRAG to BOTH-
with Emulate3Button, can cut+paste within same window using
LEFT-DRAG over text ALSO-PRESS-RIGHT
maybe into other window IF NOT focus follows mouse
CANT - get openview texteditor to use X11 selection ??
SAMBA client on 286
If anyone has a URL, all about Linux interworking with DOS machines, I'd like to include the URL. Not everyone can afford to throw their old 286 machines away, and if they can use KA9Q, or be printer servers - great.
IE I think there is an SMB client for 286 machines, made available on ftp.microsoft.com. Added to the TCP/IP from (CICA-?), you get a printer on the LAN.
